There is a very strongly worded (and rather convincing) rant going around about a fellow who claims that Google shut down all of his accounts, removed access to all his data, and basically ruined his online life. Thomas Monopoly seems to think this was a mistake and that he has done nothing to deserve this. He also goes into detail about how much energy in recent months he’s put into consolidating all his online data (email, calendars, pictures, etc) to Google’s services.

This rant has stirred up enough attention that Matt Cutts himself and made a public statement: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2795465
Whether or not he is in the wrong, regardless of what he did to violate the ToS that he claims he did not, I will be backing up my Google account data from here on out. Here’s a quick guide to backing up your Gmail: http://www.wikihow.com/Backup-Your-Gmail-Account

he’s not the only one. i’m on my 10th day of account disabled and no one will tell me why. do an experiment, pretend your account is disabled due to a perceived ToS violation and TRY go reach a google employee.
